The Urban and Biodiversity Research Development and Extension Center headed by For. Gregorio E. Santos, Jr. together with its Unit Heads visited the Office of the Provincial Governor last July 19, 2022.

During the meeting, UBRDEC officials and representatives from the Provincial Governor’s Office discussed possible technical assistance that can be provided by the Center in the province of Quezon.

UBRDEC turns over seedlings of cloned and endangered indigenous tree species to PGENRO, Mr. Emmanuel H. Beloso, as a sign of the Center’s commitment to assist the Local Government Unit in regreening the province.

For. Santos presented the technologies developed by UBRDEC which can also be applied in the province of Quezon.

These include the carrying capacity assessment, market chain analysis, development of mangrove propagation protocols, clonal propagation, bamboo plantation establishment, and many more.

He also highlighted the presence of research and development facilities managed by the UBRDEC which can further help in advancing the state of the environment in the province.

These facilities include the Forest Tree Seed Center and the Laboratories in Pagbilao Quezon as well as the Pagbilao Mangrove Experimental Forest and the Binahaan Experimental Forest.

Governor Helen Tan was represented by her Head Executive Assistant, Mr. John Francis L. Luzano. According to Mr. Luzano, the provincial government of Quezon looks forward to collaborating with UBRDEC.

He also shared the Governor’s goal to increase the forest cover and rehabilitate the denuded areas in Quezon.

To signify its intent to provide assistance to the province of Quezon, UBRDEC turned over high-quality cloned seedlings of indigenous tree species which were received by the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office headed by Mr. Emmanuel H. Beloso.

Meanwhile, Mr. Manuel M. Butardo, the Provincial Administrator of Quezon, and For. Santos also discussed possible technical assistance for the province of Quezon.

These include tree surgery in the provincial capitol, identification of appropriate species for roadside planting, use of science-based mangrove planting in the province, and provision of trainings and capacity building activities for the People’s Organizations and communities in Quezon, to name a few.

UBRDEC hopes to further strengthen its linkage with other local government units and promote the use of science-based technologies for the conservation and protection of the country’s biodiversity. Adreana Santos-Remo, UBRDEC
