UBRDEC Center Head For. Gregorio E. Santos Jr. as he delivers his lecture presentation

The Urban and Biodiversity Research Development and Extension Center (UBRDEC) of the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) facilitated a two-day training about bamboo propagation for biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood in Mulanay Quezon from May 4-5, 2023.

The purpose of the training was to beneficially impact the local communities of Mulanay Quezon by enhancing their knowledge and abilities in the usage and development of bamboo resources in their communities.

The activity was attended by 49 participants/representatives from barangays of Mulanay, Quezon and CENRO Catanauan.

Hands-on demonstration activity of bamboo propagation and plantation establishment

The UBRDEC Center Head, Forester Gregorio E. Santos, Jr., presented techniques on bamboo propagation and bamboo plantation establishment and educated the participants on the requirements for bamboo nursery establishment, operation and management. UBRDEC also conducted a hands-on demonstration to provide the participants with a step-by-step procedure on bamboo propagation.

Mulanay Mayor Aristotle L. Aguirre and the Municipal Administrator, Cristobal Jorge F. Bainto indicated their willingness and support to extend technical assistance in the implementation of activities, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and sharing the challenge of marketing bamboo goods and sustaining the grassroots’ livelihood.

Mayor Aguirre stated that he hopes to increase the bamboo population to provide sustainable resources for livelihood development while also promoting environmental protection and addressing climate change.

At the end of the activity, the designated Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO), Ms. Ma. Joelda A. Tadeja conveyed her sincere gratitude to ERDB-UBRDEC for accommodating their request.
