Forging partnerships in conserving Cebu’s forests!

A productive dialogue between the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau – Coastal Resources and Ecotourism Research, Development, and Extension Center (ERDB-CRERDEC) and key officials from the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) took place on October 27, 2023, at Camp Sergio Osmeña in Cebu City.

The discussion aimed to strengthen the ongoing management initiatives of the Experimental Forest Station (EFS) in Camp 7, Minglanilla, Cebu.

CRERDEC Center Head Jose Isidro Michael T. Padin led the dialogue, providing a comprehensive overview of CRERDEC’s mandate and functions.

The emphasis was on augmenting efforts to enhance the conservation and protection of the EFS.

Key topics discussed included the EFS’s current status, ongoing management initiatives, and addressing significant threats, such as illegal tree cutting, timber poaching, improper garbage disposal, security and safety concerns, and other planned activities.

PRO 7 Regional Director, PBGen Anthony A. Aberin, expressed gratitude for the shared insights and actively engaged in discussions on ways to assist in safeguarding the EFS and the public’s welfare.

PRO 7, thus, commits to support CRERDEC in tackling various environmental, social, and economic challenges linked to EFS management.

As a result, both parties will collaborate to draft a Memorandum of Agreement, aligning with the guidance of PBGen. Aberin, to strengthen administration devoted to the conservation and protection of the EFS.

The meeting also emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness about the EFS and its operations through an intensive information, education, and communication campaign.

The group intends to use dialogues as well to create a vibrant community and ensure an equitable, resilient, and healthy environment for present and future generations.

The collaborative efforts witnessed during this session represent a crucial step towards the long-term sustainability of Cebu’s EFS.

The EFS in Minglanilla, Cebu is a demonstration area and center for conserving and managing forest plantations, focusing on sustainable forest management and preserving natural resources.

Established through the Department Administrative Order No. 2004-51, it plays a vital role in developing innovative environmental preservation technologies and shaping the future of sustainable resource management. CVRallos, CRERDEC
