The Urban and Biodiversity Research, Development and Extension Center (UBRDEC) conducted a phenology study of Pagatpat baye (Sonneratia ovata Backer) as part of the project titled “Development of Pagbilao Mangrove Experimental Forest (PMEF)“.
The study aims to assess, determine, and document the various phenological behaviors of the mangroves in the PMEF in Pagbilao, Quezon.
The study assessed natural events such as flowering and fruiting of Pagatpat baye and its relation to seasonal climate changes. Since the timing of fruit collection is vital for the production of quality mangrove planting materials.
Monthly monitoring and assessment of the Individual Plus Trees’ behaviors were conducted from 2019 to 2021. The mangrove species were marked, geo-tagged, and assessed. Phenological parameters monitored include flower bud emergence, flower, fruit initiation, and fruit maturity.
