Staff from the CRERDEC Technology Transfer Promotion and Extension Unit (TTPEU) solicits clarifications from LGU officials and representatives of Daanbantayan on the status of their planned activities based on the action plan submitted last November 2021

The Local Government Unit of Daanbantayan is preparing its team for the implementation of carrying capacity activities in Malapascua and Carnaza Islands as agreed during a meeting conducted by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau through its Coastal Resources and Ecotourism Research Development and Extension Center (ERDB-CRERDEC) in Daanbantayan, Cebu on May 31, 2022. Stakeholders’ interest and attention on carrying capacity (CarCap) technology were once again reignited during the meeting.  The fruitful discussion elicited positive responses and generate significant agreements from participants. In addition, revisions of their action plan and schedules were set. The two island barangays committed to start off their activities this month, June 2022. Barangay officials admitted delay of their planned activities as indicated in their approved action plan due to the eventful months brought by the 2022 national election.

Last November 2021, CRERDEC capacitated the Daanbantayan key tourism stakeholders on the application, determination, and basic concepts of carrying capacity through a capacity building. An action plan was prepared and submitted by LGU Daanbantayan specifically for BLGUs of Malapascua and Carnaza Islands after the capability building.  CRERDEC tracked the progress of their planned activities and identified the issues that have prevented them from staying on schedule.  Said progress tracking in Daanbantayan is crucial to assure the adoption and implementation of the tourism carrying capacity plan for 2022-2024 in the must-visit tourism destinations in Daanbantayan, Cebu.

Daanbantayan MENR Officer, Engr. Mamerto Q. Rodrigo lauded CRERDEC for being persistent and patient in their goal of strengthening and promoting sustainable development through implementation of the Carrying Capacity in Daanbantayan’s tourism sites.  He agreed that there is an urgent need to take concrete steps to make their ecotourism sites more sustainable. Together with other LGU officials present, they vowed to keep track and planned to commence gathering the primary data on the 3rd quarter of this year. They also requested technical assistance from ERDB-CRERDEC and DENR 7 particularly the guidelines on the composition of CarCap team and methods of data collection, among others.

Technical staff from CRERDEC assured to continue monitoring the implementation of activities as stipulated in the CarCap Action Plan to ensure that the technology adoption by partner stakeholders in Daanbantayan is on track as stipulated in the signed memorandum of agreement (MOA) and approved action plan. //MJJ E.
