The Forest and Wetland Research Development and Extension Center (FWRDEC) through the Mindanao Forest Tree Seed Center (MFTSC) continued its collaboration with the Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in 2022.

The Center provided technical assistance to MSU- IIT’s Masters of Science in Environmental Science students on April 5, 2022 at Maharlika, Bislig City in their study titled “Effects of Biofertilizers on the Growth of Native Tree Species Grown in Mined-out Soils from Taganito Mining Corporation and Manila Mining Corporation (MMC)” in Claver and Placer, Surigao del Norte, respectively under nursery conditions.

After the students have presented their study, the MFSTC personnel and staff conducted an orientation and levelling-off where the students visited the laboratories of the center.

With this collaboration, during the study duration, the FWRDEC-MFTSC will further assist in the conduct of series of experiments such as extraction, isolation, purification and concentration of indigenous microorganisms from mined-out soils of TMC.

Moreover, the center will also be accommodating the students to utilize its Germplasm Testing Facility to observe the growth and molecular response of tree species grown under nursery conditions using microbial-based bioremediation protocol. Also, For. Dennis M. Gilbero DAgSci. of FWRDEC is one of the panel members of the study together with Dr. Nelly Aggangan of DOST- PCAARRD and Dr. Ruben Amparado, Jr. as the thesis adviser.

The assistance to research-based programs is one of the objectives of ERDB-FWRDEC, thus, collaboration provides technical assistance and additional knowledge and guidance in the implementation in improving ways of conducting research to achieve better learning and research outcomes.
