The Saleng Tree Cart parade with participants from the academe, private organizations and government sectors started in Session Road Rotunda down to Malcolm Square People’s Park.

The ERDB-WWRRDEC joined the Baguio City’s Tree Cart Parade during the 2nd Saleng Tree Festival on June 18 at the Session Road, Baguio City.

The parade was led by City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan and the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO). It aims to empower the community to actively participate in the City’s efforts to sustain the preservation and protection of its environment and to promote the planting of trees and greening of areas even in limited spaces.

Senior Science Research Specialist Forester Rej Winlove Bungabong served as one of the judges for the tree cart competition participated by various schools, private organizations and government sectors in Baguio City.

Participants used scraps from construction materials such as plastic, steel, and wood. This is to encourage upcycling of materials to be reinvented into something new and useful products. The participating Tree carts will be displayed at Malcolm Square on June 18 to 25, and will be planted afterwards.

Winners will receive cash prizes amounting to P25,000 for first place; P18,750, for second place; and P12,500 for third place.

The theme of this year’s Saleng Festival is aligned with the 2022 World Environment Day theme “Only One Earth”, which highlights the need to live sustainably and in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes.

It also coincides with the celebration of Philippine Environment Month with the theme “Recovering Key Species for Ecosystems Restoration” and National Arbor Day celebrated on June 25. – REJ WINLOVE M. BUNGABONG, WWRRDEC
