In line with the Environment Month celebration with its theme “#OnlyOneEarth #AksyonParaSaNatatangingMundo”, the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau- Watershed and Water Resources Research, Development and Extension Center (ERDB-WWRRDEC) calls for a collective and transformative action through capacity building of the People’s Organization- Lupao Upland Planters Association, Incorporated (LUPAI) and Barangay LGUs of Namulandayan in Lupao, Nueva Ecija.

A two (2) day training on “Bamboo Propagation and Plantation Establishment was conducted at the Barangay Hall of Namulandayan, Lupao, Nueva Ecija on June 15-16, 2022. Twenty (20) participants (12 females and 8 males) attended the training.

In her message, the TTPEU Chief, Forester Chita A. Hidalgo, mentioned that the long-term objective of the said training is not only to improve the ecological condition of the watershed areas by planting bamboo but also to uplift the socio-economic well-being of the community.

Ms. Carissa Collado, Training Specialist I, discussed the bamboo’s ecological importance specifically its contribution to the rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems and highly erodible areas, and its ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and capture heavy metals in soil.

Discussions and hands-on training on the proper pole cutting, propagule preparation (soaking in ANAA), soil media combination, and proper potting of bamboo propagule were also done. Each participant was given the chance to experience these activities.

As an output of the training, two (2) action plans were crafted from the BLGU and PO-LUPAI. The identified activities were nursery establishment for the BLGU and nursery improvement for the PO-LUPAI. The long-term plan is the establishment of a bambusetum as source of their planting stocks.  Also, they plan to apply for nursery accreditation and develop an ecotourism site in the future.

WWRRDEC provided plastic bags, ANAA, Mycorrhiza, and one (1) sack of complete fertilizer as initial materials for their bamboo nursery establishment.

During the closing program, both the LUPAI – PO Chairman Diony Delizo and BLGU Chairman Robert De Leon of Lupao, Nueva Ecija expressed their willingness to apply these bamboo technologies.

A pretest and post-test were conducted which indicated a positive result on the knowledge they got during the training. A simple token was given to each of the participants who garnered the highest rating during the post-test.

Both of them are looking forward to a continuing partnership with ERDB-WWRRDEC in the rehabilitation of watersheds using bamboo technology while at the same time improving their quality of life. WWRRDEC, Chit A. Hidalgo
