Seaside, Cebu City – More than 100 students from various schools in Cebu City participated in the Enviotech Forum of the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau last November 20, 2023 at the SM Seaside, Cebu City. The activity was conducted in celebration of the 19th National Biotechnology Week (NBW) which aimed at promoting biotechnology in conservation, preservation, and sustainable management of the environment and natural resources.
“Your presence in this forum is a testament to your curiosity, dedication, and passion for environmental conservation” said ERDB Director Maria Lourdes G. Ferrer as she addressed the participants in the activity.
She also encouraged the participants to ask questions and ask for insights that may help the students to shape their academic and career paths. “You are not just attendees, you are future innovators, scientists, and advocates who will drive the development of cutting-edge technologies that protect and restore our precious ecosystems”, she emphasized.
During the forum, ERDB experts discussed various technologies developed by the Bureau. These include seed technology, mycorrhizal technology, and macrosomatic clonal propagation. Various games, hands-on activities, and an open forum wer also facilitated to help information retention among the participants.
Aside from the Enviotech Forum, the ERDB also showcased its various technologies through an exhibit during the 5-day celebration. Various games, such as memory game and fishbowl questions were also available at the ERDB booth where students and interested participants can win prizes and know more about the Bureau.
Through the conduct of the Enviotech Forum and exhibit, the ERDB hopes to encourage the youth to pursue degrees and careers in biotechnology and other similar fields, as well as engage the youth in research and innovation.
It is the first time that the NBW was conducted outside Luzon. This year’s celebration, spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture, is themed, “Empowering Innovation for Sustainable Future with Biotechnology”. ###
