It is another “feather in the cap” for Dr. Jose Alan A. Castillo, Scientist I of the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) for winning the 2021 Elvira O. Tan Awards for “Outstanding Published Paper in Natural Resources and Environment Category.” The DOST- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) conferred the award during the 2021 PCAARRD S & T Awards and Recognition on its 10th Anniversary celebration on November 29, 2021 via Facebook Live.
Dr. Castillo co-authored the acclaimed journal article “Soil C quantities of mangrove forests, their competing land uses, and their spatial distribution in the coast of Honda Bay, Philippines” with Dr. Armando A. Apan, Dr. Tek N. Maraseni, and Dr. Severino G. Salmo III.
With the theme “Harnessing the Gains of Galing PCAARRD towards a more resilient AANR Sector”, the award aims to encourage Filipino researchers to strive hard in achieving quality R & D outputs and therefore, package better technologies for the countryside’s sustainable development.
The criteria for judging were as follows: significance/finding 70%, manuscript/write-up 20%, and presentation 10%.
Dr. Castillo and his co-authors also won the E.O. Tan Awards in 2019 for their paper article titled “Estimation and mapping of above-ground biomass of mangrove forests and their replacement land uses in the Philippines using Sentinel imagery“Marla V. Cambay, TTD
