The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) conducted the Capacity Building on Batikuling Nursery and Plantation Establishment on December 5, 2014 at Paete, Laguna in close coordination with the local government unit of Paete. The whole-day event was graced by Paete Mayor Rojilyn Q. Bagabaldo and Vice Mayor Aurelio P. Paraiso.

The capacity building activity was in response to the Paeteños' need for more raw materials for the wood carving industry. Batikuling is the primary wood used for carving in the municipality. According to Mayor Bagabaldo, they want to start planting batikuling in the upland areas not only for wood carving purposes but for environmental reasons as well. It would also lessen the cost of production as they import most of their raw materials from nearby provinces. The training was a very timely opportunity to impart knowledge and proper techniques on propagating batikuling.

The training was comprised of lectures and actual demonstration on non-mist clonal propagation. At the end of the activity, the participants were expected to acquire additional knowledge on batikuling propagation and share it with other interested stakeholders. Representatives from different barangays composed of barangay officials, farmers, wood carvers, POs, and other interested individuals attended the capacity building event. Malaya N. Montesur, TDD
