Bgy. Sucat, Muntinlupa is one of the adopters of the Pollutant-Absorbent Plant Species for vertical/urban greening project. As UTHRC’s partner, technical assistance is being provided since 2016 to ensure the success of the vertical planting project using PAPs. In order to build a stronger LGUs partnership, the UTHRC-TPPEU conducted a seminar on toxic substances and hazardous waste on July 19, 2018 at Brgy. Sucat, Muntinlupa City. The activity is part of an IEC campaign which aims to promote the center’s concerns specifically on toxic substances and hazardous waste. Attendees of the seminar comprised of 11 males and 42 females representing different sectors of the barangay.

Barangay Chairman Rafael Sevilla welcomed the participants. In his message, he appreciated the efforts of the ERDB-UTHRC in conducting the seminar that he considers beneficial to their barangay. He further stressed that proper waste disposal of e-waste particularly engine batteries should be strictly followed.

Five different topics related to toxic substances and hazardous waste were presented by the UTHRC technical staff such as a) Information on RA 6969: Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act of 1990 by Ms. Jennie Vale, Sr. SRS; b) Impacts of Toxic Substances and Hazardous Waste to Human Health and Environment by Mr. Julius Bañega, SRS II; c) Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) by Forester Mary Catherine delos Reyes, SRS I ; d) Recommended Pollutant-Absorbent Plant Species (PAPS) for Vertical / Urban Greening by Ms. Irene Legaspi, Sr. SRS; and e) Remediation Options for Polluted Waterways by Engr. Teresa Salanguit, Supervising SRS.

After this activity, the team also met with Barangay Chairman Rafael Sevilla. During the meeting, Chairman Sevilla expressed his gratitude to the UTHRC team for the conduct of the seminar and signified his interest for another seminar that will cater to other sectors of the barangay i.e. industrial and commercial groups. Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of wastewater treatment facility in the barangay. Accordingly, the barangay requires the establishment of said facility before giving permit to business establishments in their area of jurisdiction. UTHRC
