Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary, Roy A. Cimatu led the formal turnover ceremony for the new Director of the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) on Tuesday, June 5 in Los Baños, Laguna.
The seat was transferred to the new Director, Dr. Sofio B. Quintana, from the outgoing Dr. Henry A. Adornado, who has recently been designated as the DENR Region IV-B’s Regional Director after serving ERDB since 2015.
Prior to ERDB directorship, Quintana had been serving as the Department’s Regional Director providing leadership and direction in DENR Region IV-A and ensuring environment concerns are promptly and effectively addressed.
He had also been the Regional Technical Director for Forestry of DENR Region 3 in 2006 and later became the Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services of DENR (NCR) in the same year. He is also a former Assistant Director of the Forest Management Bureau. Quintana became the Vice-Chair of the Editorial Board of DENR’s technical journal on ecosystems and natural resources, Sylvatrop, for 6 years.
In his message, Adornado urged ERDB employees to “also give him (Quintana) the full support in order to successfully achieve the mandates of this bureau in line with the trust and programs the department under the leadership of Secretary Cimatu”
Sec. Cimatu who came straight from South Korea visit, emphasized in his inspirational message the rehabilitation of Boracay Island of its shores and wetlands. He also said redefining mining is the first priority that the newly recalled ERDB Director will be resolving.
“Ito yung ating unang gagawin based on the instruction of the President [that] we should reinvent mining especially in the open-pit mining,” quipped Cimatu.
Quintana, on the other hand, responded positively to Cimatu’s instructions and expressed that among his initial plans is to lead ERDB in reviewing its strategic plan to ensure that “the plans are fully supportive of the ten priority programs of the Secretary.” Karol Josef O. Lucena
