Presidential Proclamation PP 1414 declares every last week of November as the National Biotechnology Week (NBW), This also signals the opening of the 13th National Biotechnology Week which was held on Nov. 20, 2017 at the Fisher Mall Expo Hall in Quezon City.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Lamang ang Masa at Magsasaka sa Limang “K” ng Bioteknolohiya”, For this year the Department of Agriculture (DA) is the chair while the Department of Science and Technology is the co-chair.
Undersecretary Segfredo Serrano gave the welcome remarks. He said, ”Every technology has risks and biotechnology is too uncertain. But there is no technology in this world that has no risks. We have a regulatory system that is not perfect but we have not one single untoward incident on GM crops in this country”. Lastly, he urged the people to support biotechnology.
Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives Honorable Sharon Garin gave the keynote address. She said, “We need out of the box solutions to our problems in agriculture that only the application of biotechnology can provide. She added, “I believe that biotechnology is one of the main solutions to food security so we can have a stable environment in this country”.
The last part of the program was the declaration of the opening of the NBW 2017 celebration by USEC Serrano. This was followed by the ceremonial launching of the NBW 2017 Exhibit and Trade Fair Bazaar.
Also, a press conference on biotechnology was held at the 3rd floor of the Fisher Mall. Among those present during the interview were For. Gregorio E.
