The Department of Science and Technology Region- IV will be having the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) with the theme, “Science for the People: S&T in Harmony with Biodiversity,” on August 2-4, 2017 in Los Baños, Laguna. This year’s Regional STW will feature back to back activities with the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI) Syensaya dubbed as the Los Baños Science Festival.
Major part of the celebration is Syensaya’s Wonderama Exhibit, an interactive urban, marine, agriculture and environment related S&T exhibits. This will be located at the Copeland Gymnasium, University of the Philippines, Los Baños and is open to public during the entire duration of the celebration.
Simultaneously with the Wonderama Exhibit are the various fora including the DOST CALABARZON Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Forum: Building a Strong Community with Sustainable Livelihood Through CEST. The forum targets the farmers in CALABARZON Region to broaden their potential market through the provision of farming and production technologies and strategies.
Additionally, LBSCFI will conduct the Environmental Forum on Water Security of Los Baños, Laguna chaired by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) of DENR. This event will be attended by members of the local government, homeowners, and water purifying station owners in Los Baños. It aims to provide awareness on the status of the Mt. Makiling Watershed; policies and ordinances in the use of water resources; and issues related to water security, quality, demand, and supply.
On the last day of the three-day, the annual R&D Awards will be held to acknowledge outstanding research and development endeavors conducted by experts in the science community.
With the R&D Awards is the new LBSCFI Youth Science Awards (pilot conduct in 2018, open to schools in Los Baños). Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, LBSCFI President and DOST CALABARZON Regional Director, intends to expose the students to S&T researches and promote innovativeness among the CALABARZON youth. A forum is scheduled on August 4, 2017 to encourage teachers in Los Baños, Laguna to promote Science and Technology- centered researches to students and put them up as entries in the said competition.
