As part of the continuing effort of UTHRC to capacitate clients on ENR related technologies, the office conducted the “Appreciation Tour cum Hands-on Training on Plant Propagation” among the seven (7) participants (3 males, 4 females) from Bgy. NBBS, Navotas City on April 27, 2017. The activity consisted of two parts. The 1st part was a field visit at the BMB project area on vertical planting structure planted with recommended pollution-absorbent plant species located inside the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center, Quezon City.
Chief, Park Superintendent Mr. Nelson Castillo welcomed the participants with some UTHRC staff. “The partnership of ERDB and BMB on the said urban greening project significantly motivated the BMB in replicating it to other areas in the park”, Mr. Castillo cited.
The second part of the activity was on plant propagation demonstration held at the UTHRC Clonal nursery in DOST, Taguig City. Ms. Evangeline Marcelino, Unit Head, Techno Packaging Promotion Unit reiterated that the undertaking is part of the built-in activity of the partnership between ERDB-UTHRC and Bgy, NBBS, Navotas City. These participants are the assigned NBBS personnel who will take charge in the maintenance and propagation of the established UTHRC vertical structures planted with recommended absorbent-pollution plant species in the said barangay.
Forester Rey Abadiano discussed the seedling production procedures vis-à-vis actual demo on macro-somatic clonal propagation. Moreover, he explained the step-by-step procedures from selection of candidate plus tree/mother plants, collection of cuttings to seedling propagation. Seedling maintenance was also discussed. Hands-on training applying the different propagation procedures was conducted at the recovery area and hedge garden. Moreover, marcotting and grafting procedures were also demonstrated.
Consequently, the participants were given the chance to do seed nicking, proper sowing procedure, fungicide application and seed storage. In terms of seedling production through cuttings, participants also participated in the hands-on activity. Most of the participants showed commitment and enthusiasm on the whole day activity.
