The ERDB National Greening Program (NGP) conducted its year-end assessment of SUCs’ performance as partners in the production of quality planting materials. The event was held on Dec. 6-9, 2016 at the Southern Luzon State University in Lucban, Quezon. It also highlighted three activities that include launching of exhibit and symposium, presentation of Annual Accomplishments of partner SUCs and open forum.
Special awards were given to 10 selected SUCs for their highly satisfactory performance in the production of Quality Planting Materials (QPM) from 2011-2016 through cloning and conventional methods. The five universities that produced the most number of cloned planting materials were: Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Ramon Magsaysay Technological University (RMTU), Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), and Southern Phillippine Agribusiness, Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST).
For the universities that produced the most number of wildings and seedlings, the top five universities were Apayao State College (ASC), SLSU, RMTU, Aklan State University (ASU) and TAU. Special citation was also given to Dr. Anthony Penaso, Caraga State University President for consistently attending and participating in all ERDB-NGP-PQPM discussions since its implementation.
Four papers were presented during the symposium. These papers were: Macropropagation using Softwood Cuttings by For. Enrico L. Barbosa of ERDB; VSU-DENR/ERDB Tree Clonal Project Initiative by Dr. Eduardo O. Mangaoang of the Visayas State University; Conservation of Threatened Forest Trees in Mt. Banahaw through Vegetative propagation by For. Kathreena E. Gutierrez of SLSU; and Demonstration on Hi-QVam 1 Mycorrhizal Application. Over 200 students and guests attended the symposium.
Aside from the ERDB Director Henry A. Adornado, RD Reynulfo A. Juan, DENR R4A Director, and DENR USEC Sylvia M. Ordoñez also gave short messages on NGP with emphasis on bamboo and mangrove species as the new priority program of the Department.
Other guests include Dr. Lucena U. Mercado, Center Chief of LAUFTeRC who presented the Year-end Discussion Overview; Dr. Gaudelina Rodovan, SLSU Vice President gave the Welcome Remarks; Dr. Alicia Lustica of BCWERC and Dr. Carlos Arida of WWRRC.
During the opening day of the event, the guests and participants were welcomed by Dr. Milo O. Placino, SLSU President. Hon. Armando V. Abutal.
