In line with the celebration of the Disaster Preparedness Consciousness Month from July 1-31, 2016, a one-day seminar on disaster preparedness was held on July 20, 2016 at the ERDB auditorium. This year’s theme is “Kahandaan at Pagtugon sa Sakuna Tungkulin ng Bawat Isa”.

A total of 318 participants attended the seminar from various divisions/units of ERDB. Representatives from the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity were also invited in the seminar.

ERDB Assistant Director, Dr. Antonio M. Daño gave the welcome remarks. He thanked the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for giving the briefing on disaster preparedness. He encouraged everyone to participate in the simulation exercises during the seminar.

Municipal Disaster and Risk .Reduction Management (MDRRM) Consultant of Los Banos, Retired Superintendent Renato A. Samson encouraged everyone to re-echo what they would learn in the simulation exercises. He also urged everyone to be always prepared for any disaster that would occur.

Fire Officer (FO) III Mr. Duanee Fadri discussed the BFP’s mission, vision and legal mandate. He also showed some footages of the fire that broke out at the Kentex Rubber Manufacturing Factory in Valenzuela City.

Mr. Jefferson S. Samson, Fire Officer II explained the meaning, characteristics, stages and components of fire. He also tackled the classification of fire which are: Class A (light combustible materials), Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (current), Class D (sand or all purpose chemicals) and Class K (kitchen or cooking oil). He also showed the types of fire extinguisher and its parts. Lastly, he explained the safety and fire prevention tips.

FO1 Ricardo Culvera, Jr. gave an overview of the topography of the Phillippines, effects of earthquakes, things to do before an earthquake and the prevention and mitigation measures.

FO2 Jefferson Samson also delivered the lecture on First Aid. He gave the definition of first aid, recovery positions, types and degree of burn, different types of bandage and emergency methods of moving casualties.

After the lectures, a fire drill was conducted. At the sound of the siren everyone went out of the building. Further instructions were given by MDRRMO Supt. Renato Samson.

Another simulation exercise was held at the ERDB grounds on how to safely put out a fire by using the portable fire extinguisher.

ERDB Director Henry A. Adornado thanked the BFP group for sharing their knowledge on the activity. He said, “We need to upgrade our tools for emergencies especially the fire extinguishers and fire alarm”.
