The Mining and Degraded Areas Rehabilitation Research Center (MDARRC) in cooperation with the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC)- Davao del Norte of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Region XI conducted a training-workshop on Nursery Management and Tree Propagation for the members of Davao del Norte Person with Disability Association (DAVNOR PWD Association) on April 11-14, 2016 at MDARRC Research Station 1, Amas, Kidapawan City, Cotabato.
There were thirty (30) participants from DAVNOR PWD Association who attended the training-workshop. They were accompanied by the staff of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of Davao del Norte.
Forester Alex R. Palero, Senior Science Research Specialist of MDARRC welcomed the participants and expressed his high hopes that the training would open doors for another livelihood opportunity that would uplift the economic condition in employment and sustainable livelihood among PWDs.
The lectures focused on forest tree seed collection, processing and storage; production of quality planting materials through cloning and application of mycorrhiza, nursery establishment as an enterprise, global warming and relevance of Gender and Development.
During the practicum, the participants had the chance to experience the actual process of cloning. Though some of them struggled due to their physical condition, it did not hinder them to undergo the training.
“PWDs have their right to live the same way as any other human being. MDARRC believes that their disability is not a hindrance to live a meaningful life. That’s why we are delighted that the DAVNOR PWD Association chose MDARRC to be their learning venue and it is our pride to be of service to them,” For. Palero said during his closing message.
