Experimental Stations

MIMAROPA

There are two Experimental Forests within the administrative jurisdiction of ERDS RIV-B:  the Mindoro and Palawan Experimental Forest Stations.  Each has Experimental Forest Development Plan in which the activities conducted every calendar year are patterned.

The Mindoro Experimental Forest in Mindoro Oriental was established by virtue of Forestry Administrative Order No. 54, Series of 1969 as amended by FAO No. 54-1, Series of 1970 with an aggregate area of 1,200 hectares.  The area is within the administrative jurisdiction of Oriental Mindoro as implemented by BFD Administrative Order No. 8, Series of 1975.  This is mainly situated within the municipality of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro.

The Palawan Experimental Forest was established pursuant to Section 18 of P.D. 705, Section 2 of P.D. 607 and MNR Administrative Order No. 7, Series of 1978.  This research station covers an aggregate area of 795 hectares and is located at Barangays Bagumbayan and Napsan, Puerto Princesa City.  Established within the area are several plantations such as Rattan Plantation established in 1988 covering 12 hectares; Bamboo plantation also in 1988; Ipil Plantation in 1983; Serpentinia Blocks; Bangkal Plantation established in 1983; Plantation of mixed species of apitong, moluccan sau, kaatoan bangkal and yemane established in 1975;  Dipterocarp Plantation in 1994 and 1995; and Seed Production Area of Ipil established in 1995.

CALABARZON

The 145-hectare Pagbilao Mangrove Experimental Forest is home to 48 true mangrove and mangrove associate species. Originally established in 1977 by the Forest Research Institute as a secondary forest and declared in 1992 by the Canadian Seed Center as a Genetic Resource Center. The site became the first mangrove research center in the country. It also serves as a recreational area and eco-destination.

LEGAZPI CITY

A mini forest ecosystem in itself, the lush greenery on a hilly and undulating terrain is strategically located at the back of the Bicol University Campus, approximately 500 meters from the national road and about 10 minutes ride to the City commercial center or the nearest airport.  The site covers around 8 hectares.

The Experimental forest is currently planted to different indigenous and exotic species of forest trees as well as non-timber forest species which include: 18,000 m2 rattan plantation planted to palasan (Calamus merillii) and tagiktik (Calamus filispadix) in 1986; Mahogany  (Sweitennia macrophylla) plantation; dipterocarp Species (white lauan  Shorea contorta) and bagtikan; gmelina plantation and Bagras (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) plantation. Other forest species and indigenous softwood and shrubs are present.  Also, hedge gardens of apitong, white lauan, gmelina arborea and other indigenous species are found in the area.

The place is also blessed with some archeological and historical features. Among the interesting features are the 1901 American constructed reservoir and tunnel which is now the Shrine of St. Lorenzo Ruiz. Boulders and remnants of Mount Mayon eruption are also found in the area.
