The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) through its Gender and Development Focal Point System (GADFPS) conducted the awarding ceremony for the Community Container Vegetable Gardening Contest via Zoom and Facebook Live on June 30, 2021.
Dr. Henry A. Adornado acknowledged the importance of the Environment Month as well as the conduct of community container vegetable gardening. “Isang patunay [ang contest] na ang mga kababaihan, kahit nasa bahay, they can show the important role para mapangalagaan ang ating kalikasan lalo na doon sa mga highly urbanized areas na kung saan limited ang space.
The mechanics of the contest was briefly discussed by Myline O. Aparente, Community Development Officer III of the Technology Transfer Division. The contest was joined by Barangay Malinta, Maahas, Bagong Silang, Tadlac, Batong Malake, Mayondon, Bambang, and Anos.
The judges also shared their insights and experience while visiting the community container vegetable garden of the 8 barangays.
Ms. Karen Magat highlighted the unity among women in the conduct of this contest. “Nakita natin doon ang innovation ng mga kababaihan, ‘yung pagiging malikhain. ‘Yung mga kaalaman at karunungan na natutunan noong webinar ng March ay talagang na-apply nila. Nakikita rin ang pagkakaisa ng sektor ng kababaihan.”
Mr. Paul Cuadra, Senior Science Research Specialist of Forest Ecosystem Research Division, congratulated all contestants for initiating and participating in the community garden. He also reiterated the primary objective of the contest.
Lastly, Mr. Villamor A. Ladia Jr, University Researcher II at University of the Philippines Los Baños Institute of Plant Breeding, reminded the participants of the contest on the importance and benefits of maintaining the vegetable garden. “Kahit tapos na ang ating contest, sana hindi dito nagtatapos kundi ito ay i-maintain natin. Sabi ko nga noong lecture bringing the food production closer to the table para araw araw meron tayong mapagkukunang ng sariwa at masustansyang pagkain.”
Dr. Marilyn Q. Lalican, Chief of the Laboratory Experimental Services Division and GAD Focal Point, led the awarding of winners for the community container vegetable gardening. Barangay Malinta was announced as champion of the contest with a score of 99.67%.
