The ERDB’s Watershed and Water Resources Research Development and Extension Center (WWRRDEC) held its Annual Technical Seminar (ATS) on Water Valuation at the DENR-CAR Training Center in Baguio City on June 9, 2021. The ATS is one of the deliverables of TTEU headed by Ms. Minda S. Odsey.

The seminar was attended by personnel from the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Protected Areas of DENR-CAR Regional Office and PENRO Benguet. Center Head .

Ms. Helen A. Maddumba welcomed the participants after which Ms. Odsey discussed the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA) Framework which is one of the necessary tools in attaining a balance economic performance and use of the environment for sustainable development.

Forester George G. Tomin tackled the Water Resource Valuation wherein he presented a study related to the topic which was conducted in Laoag, Ilocos Norte.

The study was conducted to come up with a benchmark of a water discharge of the remaining forest cover and determine and compute the value of water discharge of a watershed area.

Forester Tomin mentioned that the result could be used as basis for payment for environmental services to preserve and conserve the area in order to sustain and if possible enhance the water discharge of the watershed.

Ms. Odsey added that if ever environmental fees are to be imposed, the collections should be used for the development and protection of the resource for its sustainability.

In closing, Ms. Linda Claire Pawid, DENR-CAR PASU acknowledged the importance of water valuation.

Ms. Pawid also expressed gratitude to WWRRDEC for selecting them as participants to the seminar. After the program, IEC materials were distributed to all the participants. (Margeline Q. Diano, WWRRDEC)
