UBRDEC together with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Southern Luzon Command (SolCom) held bamboo planting to celebrate the World Bamboo Day. The event was carried out in Brgy. Marao, Padre Burgos, Quezon with special participation of the Presidential Adviser for Southern Tagalog Secretary Dennis F. Hernandez on September 18, 2020.

We celebrate World Bamboo Day to raise awareness on the potentials of this plant, especially in environmental protection and conservation at the same time provision of sustainable livelihood,” said Secretary Hernandez. According to him, he is fascinated with bamboo for its numerous benefits that’s why he personally promotes bamboo.

Before the bamboo planting activity, UBRDEC Center Head Gregorio E. Santos Jr. demonstrated the proper way to propagate bamboo. He also introduced the Hi-Q VAM 1 and its effectiveness in growing bamboo. Aside from its economic benefits, Center Head Santos emphasized the use of bamboo in biodiversity protection and conservation.

AFP SolCom Chief LtGen Antonio G. Parlade Jr. expressed his gratitude to the 70 participants of the celebration. According to the AFP SolCom Chief, they are hopeful that this will be the start of a productive collaboration not just with UBRDEC but with different agencies present in the event. The AFP and UBRDEC are working together on a project on bamboo plantation in achieving sustainable biodiversity.

Two hundred rooted cuttings were planted in Brgy. Marao, Padre Burgos, Quezon. The species that were planted were iron bamboo and kawayan kiling. The UBRDEC and AFP SolCom will closely monitor the plantation to make sure that these will grow and thrive in the site.

UBRDEC staff celebrates the World Bamboo Day by planting ornamental bamboo in the office vicinities in Pagbilao, Quezon.

To celebrate the World Bamboo Day in the office, staff in Pagbilao, Quezon, headed by its Center Head Santos planted 17 bamboo propagules within the office’s vicinities. The species planted were golden bamboo, tonkin cane, marbled variegated and blowpipe bamboo. These ornamental species will add in aesthetic value of the office as they grow.

Mr. Alejo N. Balaguer, Legazpi UBRDEC Station Head, discusses the importance of bamboo in Brgy. Manaet, Cagraray Island, Bacacay, Albay and UBRDEC staff in Mindoro station holds bamboo planting activity to celebrate the World Bamboo Day.

The UBRDEC stations in Legazpi, Albay and Calapan, Occidental Mindoro, on the other hand, simultaneously celebrated the World Bamboo Day by providing technical assistance and conduct bamboo planting in their respective areas. Mr. Alejo N. Balaguer, Station Head in Legazpi, discussed the importance of bamboo and introduced the relevant ERDB technologies to the 30 participants in Brgy. Manaet, Cagraray Island, Bacacay, Albay. Moreover, UBRDEC station in Mindoro, headed by Engr. Edmichael Figueroa planted 30 bamboo planting stocks in Brgy. Maidlang, Calapan City to contribute in biodiversity richness in the site.

The UBRDEC has been active in promoting sustainable biodiversity and recognizes the potential of bamboo to the Center’s goal.
