In order to engage and consult stakeholders on the ground, the Urban and Biodiversity Research, Development and Extension Research Center (UBRDEC) led the coordination meeting to discuss the proposed study “Ecological Characterization and Carrying Capacity Assessment of Puerto Princesa Underground River” on August 28, 2019 at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSNRNP) – Protected Area Management Office, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
The meeting was attended by UBRDEC Center Head Gregorio E. Santos Jr.; ERDB-Coastal Zone and Freshwater Ecosystem Research Division (CZFERD) Chief Dr. Carmelita I. Villamor; and PPSNRNP Protected Area Superintendent Elizabeth A. Maclang. Also in attendance were representatives from PENRO-Palawan (Johny P. Lilang), CENRO-Puerto Princesa (Ma. Vivian O. Soriano), and District Manager of Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) Teresita A. Batul. Technical personnel from the DENR, UBRDEC, ERDB, PPSNRNP and PCSD also participated.
The proposed study aimed to assess the status of ecological condition and the number of visitors that the area can contain without impairing the beauty and disturbing the ecology of this important biodiversity site. Discussed during the meeting were the rationale, strategic plan and specific activities and deliverables of the study. Also highlighted were the proposed roles, responsibilities and involvement of the stakeholders. In response, the stakeholders laid down their individual commitments to provide technical, manpower, and other logistical support for the successful implementation of the study.
