Pililla, Rizal—The Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI) and Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) established its partnership for the project “Strengthening PSFI’s Capability in Clonal Nursery Operation and Management and Bamboo Propagation through ERDB-PSFI Collaboration”.
Through a Memorandum of Agreement signed last April 28, 2017, PSFI showed its support to the call of Former Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III’s Executive Order No. 193, issued on Nov 12, 2015 expanding the implementation of the National Greening Program (eNGP) from 2016 to 2028. As part of their corporate social responsibility activities, they committed to support eNGP through the production of quality planting materials/seedlings of indigenous tree species including bamboo propagules while availing the technical expertise of ERDB.
Subsequently, PSFI launched their clonal facilities and forest nursery in Brgy. Malaya, Pililla, Rizal last July 26, 2018. In attendance were Shell Philippines and PSFI officials including: Country Manager, Mr. Cesar G. Romero; Executive Director Edgardo Veron Cruz; Vice President and External & Government Relations BOD member, Mr. Ramon del Rosario; with ERDB officials namely: For. Ma. Lourdes DC. Reyes, Assistant National Coordinator [ANC] for NGP-Production of Quality Planting Materials [NGP-PQPM]); Mr. Angelito B. Exconde (ANC-Bamboo Plantation Development Project [BPDP]); and For. Celso P. Diaz, former ERDB Director and current NGP-PQPM Consultant, among others.
“PSFI has been carrying out tree planting activities for the past several years…this clonal nursery is expected to yield about 30,000 seedlings for a period of nine to twelve months—a big jump from what we [currently] produce [in our existing nurseries]”, Executive Director Edgardo Veron Cruz said in his speech during the launching of the project. Country Manager of Shell Philippines, Mr. Cesar G. Romero also shared how they are proud that PSFI is a partner of the government’s eNGP. “The regard for the environment is very high in Shell’s agenda…we see a very good alignment on what Shell wants to happen with what the country and the government wants to happen”, he added.
As part of the preparation in making the clonal facility operational, the ERDB conducted a training on Tree Clonal and Bamboo Propagation Technology, and Nursery Operations last September 12-14, 2018 at the PSFI Training Center in Malaya, Pililla, Rizal.
