In solidarity with the whole world in fighting for trash-free oceans that can be bequeathed to future generations, BCWERC staff joins DENR-7 and other partners in a local coastal cleanup activity conducted at Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, Cebu last September 22, 2018.

Armed with pickers and sacks, participants from various national government agencies, LGUs and private companies braved the early morning sun to collect non-biodegradable thrashes that litter the shoreline. Organizers from the DENR-7 conducted waste audit by tallying collected thrash categorized as residual plastics, recyclables, and special wastes.

BCWERC participants collected a total of 10 kg residual plastics, 26 kg diapers, and 13 kg of recyclable materials within an hour.

The local coastal cleanup activity was part of the Annual International Coastal Cleanup celebrated every 3rd Saturday of September. However, due to inclement weather as brought by typhoon Ompong which hit Northern Philippines, the local coastal cleanup activity in Cebu was rescheduled on September 22, 2018.

The Philippines started participating in the ICC in 1994 and since then, the activity became an annual event throughout the country. J.T. Sumabat, BCWERC
